Sherry Fillip Young

I met my husband Ron Young at Angelo State and we married in September 1976. He is from the Sweetwater/Nolan area. We first lived in Ypsilanti, MI, where I worked for the Center for Forensic Psychiatry as a medical transcriptionist. After one brutal winter in Michigan and missing our Texas roots, we moved to Midland, TX. There Ron worked for a CPA firm and both of our children were born there as well. After finishing his CPA certification, Ron took a job with Gulf Oil (later Gulf/Chevron) in New Orleans and we lived in Slidell, LA. There I taught music to 1st-12th grades at a Christian School. After being there for many years, the company Ron worked for closed the New Orleans office. We took the option of a severance package in lieu of moving to California. We temporarily moved to San Angelo and we both worked in my dad's marine business. During that time, Ron had been considering returning to school for his doctorate in accounting, so we moved to Lubbock, TX for him to attend Texas Tech. While he was in graduate school, I worked as a legal secretary and later at a food brokerage. After Ron received his doctorate, we returned to Slidell, LA and he taught accounting at The University of New Orleans. I was mainly home to care for our kids, but later taught music at our church's preschool and was also a LA Music Specialist leading workshops for children's music in churches.
After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, a reduced student population and continued budget cuts at UNO, Ron pursued a change and we moved to Wichita Falls, TX where he taught at Midwestern State University. When COVID hit our world, a lot changed with teaching at the university level. Subsequently, he retired in 2021 and in October 2022 we moved Abilene to be closer to our families and help with the needs of several family members.
Some of my hobbies include cooking, researching genealogy and activities with our grandchildren. We've enjoyed travelling. We have taken several international trips and have done a lot of cruising to the Caribbean, because we lived near the Port of New Orleans. We have also cruised to Alaska several times. I think about 25 cruises in all.
We have 3 grandchildren: Leia (b. 2013), Ace (b. 2017) & Clover (b. 2023). Currently our lives are spent going back and forth to California, visiting our kids and grandkids and involvement in our church. We love retirement!
